Pregnancy Massage

Pregnancy is an exciting time for mums-to-be bringing tremendous changes. These are not just physical ones but also mental and emotional ones in anticipation of the new arrival. For many women it can also be a demanding time as the body is put under increased stresses. The hormone relaxin causes joints to become more lax in preparation for the birth and backache is common as the spine’s natural curves increase to accommodate the weight of the enlarging foetus. Massage is a wonderful way to help unwind, relieve aches and pains and aid relaxation during this time.
What are the benefits?

Massage during pregnancy will not only bring physical benefits but psychological and emotional ones too.
  • Aids relaxation and induces a sense of wellbeing
  • Helps tone muscles and improve skin tone
  • Helps lengthen muscles that tend to become tight (due to postural changes)
  • Improves circulation which may help reduce the likelihood of varicose veins and haemorrhoids
  • Stimulates the lymphatic system encouraging the elimination of waste products and helping to reduce fluid retention
  • Uplifting and revitalising
  • Helps prepare the body for childbirth
How is massage delivered during pregnancy?

Massage during pregnancy can be done with the client seated or lying on their side. Massage done whilst lying on the back is kept to a minimum or avoided depending on the individual’s preference and the stage of pregnancy.

Please note: It is generally recommended that massage is avoided in the first trimester (weeks 1-13). If you are unsure about your suitability for massage, or if you have pre-eclampsia or have had any bleeding or acute abdominal pain, please consult your GP or midwife for advice.
